When the 2012 racing season got underway back in April, Billy Dunn and his team had some lofty goals and a busy schedule. They intended to race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park weekly, and follow the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series. They also planned on dabbling into the 358 Modified ranks with a limited schedule at Mohawk International Raceway but those plans would eventualy change.
Before the end of the first month of the season, Dunn already accomplished one of his early season goals. He picked up his first ever win at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday, April 28th and established himself as a contender at the historic track with a stellar field of weekly competitors.
Dunn scored a big win at Can Am Motorsports Park on May 23rd and competed weekly at Canandaigua with mixed results. He also ran a couple events at Mohawk International Raceway scoring top three finishes both times.
In June, Dunn joined forces with Laurent Ladouceur and his team and planned on running a few races in the Ladouceur backup car. The plan was to give Billy some more seat time, and in return, help bolster the Ladouceur team with the help of Billy and the Number One Speed Shock Service. Success was found instantly Dunn went out and won a 75 lap Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series race, and backed that up with a win again the following week. He was also gaining consistency at Canandaigua, ending the month with three consecutive top five finishes.
With summer upon us, Dunn continued his successful season in July with two more wins at Mohawk Raceway, a pair of top five finishes in the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series at Albany-Saratoga Speedway and Autodrome Drummond. He also continued his consistency at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, establishing himself as a top five contender in the battle for the championship.
Billy began the month of August with yet another win at Mohawk Raceway with the Ladouceur team. He also picked up another win at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, and continued to score top five finishes with the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series with a fifth place run at Merrittville Speedway and a third at the inaugural event at I-96 Speedway in Michigan.
So far this season, Dunn as made 42 starts and picked up a total on nine feature wins. He has 26 top five finishes and 33 top ten results. He has claimed the 2012 358 Modified track championship at Mohawk International Raceway despite missing a week earlier in the year, and also claimed the 2012 Frenchie’s “Chevy Runs Deep” 358 Modified Series Championship. He finished the season in the top five in points at Canandaigua, and currently sits fourth overall in the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series.
This coming weekend, Dunn will return to Mohawk Raceway looking for familiar track advantage as the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series rolls into the pristine Hogansburg, New York facility this coming Friday night. He will return to the Ladouceur team on Saturday for the 75 lap 358 Modified Mr. DIRTcar Series race. Dunn won a Mr. DIRTcar 358 event at Mohawk earlier this season and will be looking to capture his first ever Super DIRTcar Series win.
With Super DIRT Week approaching quickly, Dunn is looking forward to getting back to the New York State Fairground in Syracuse next month. He participated in a Super DIRT Week promotional event through the city of Syracuse on Monday, building the anticipation of this huge event. He had a fast car in 2010 before falling out of the race early, and returned last season earning the outside pole award, winning his qualifying heat and the Safety-Kleen Shootout. He had a great run going in last year’s SEF 200 before getting caught up in a wreck just past the halfway point of the race. Optimism is high as Dunn hopes to return next month and etch his name on the list of Super DIRT Week champions.
Dunn would like to thank Number One Speed, Pemco Contracting, SUNY Canton, FastLube of Watertown, Frosty’s Ice Cream, American Traditions Motorsports, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, Jiffy Dumpster and Bicknell Racing Products for their continued support for the 2012 racing season.
