After having mixed results the previous weekend with a broken drive shaft at Mohawk Raceway and win at Canandaigua, Billy was ready to get back to the track looking continue his phenomenal season. He had a busy weekend planned with events at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday night and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday and Monday for 100 lap DIRTcar Series events.
With rain developing late Thursday and lasting throughout the entire day on Friday, it soon became evident that Mohawk Raceway would have no choice but to cancel the night’s events. Canandaigua was up next, and as much as track officials tried to get the track ready to race, they too lost out to Mother Nature.
The action finally shifted to Cornwall Speedway on Sunday night for the 100 lap Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series race. Dunn was the second fastest qualifier in his time trial group and backed that up with a second place result in his heat race, making the all important redraw for a top 12 starting spot in the 100 lap main event. Billy rolled off the starting grid from the third position and quickly moved to second before they had completed lap three. The first caution of the race slowed the field on lap five and Billy charged to the lead shortly after the restart and appeared well in command of the Super DIRTcar Series race. After working his way around lapped traffic, Dunn had built up a healthy advantage, but with 65 laps in the books, he started to lose power steering and just a few laps later he was done for the night.
Dunn brought out his Number One Speed sponsored 358 Modified out on Monday night for the 358 Modified series race at Cornwall. The bad luck from the previous night continued and after starting the 100 lap feature from the rear of the field he was caught up in a lap 2 crash that put him out for the night.
The 358 Modified DIRTcar Series resumes this Wednesday night at Ransomville Speedway. Dunn will then return to Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night in the Laurent Ladouceur owned car. On Saturday night they will return to Canandaigua Motorsports Park looking to capture the points lead for the first time in his career at Canandaigua.
Billy Dunn would like to thank Number One Speed, FastLube of Watertown, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, Glen A. Gould Estate Construction, Frosty’s Ice Cream, and Bicknell Racing Products for their continued support for the 2013 racing season.
