With
the 2012 season just wrapping up this past weekend with the World Finals at the
Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Billy Dunn and his Number One Speed
racing team finished with a sixth place finish overall in the Big Block
Modified Super DIRTcar Series. The
results at Charlotte were not what the team had hoped, but looking back on his
accomplishments throughout the season, 2012 was very successful for the
Watertown, New York racer.
After
making the 12 hour trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, Billy and his team hit
the track on Thursday night for qualifying.
As in the past for the World Finals, qualifying for both Friday night
and Saturday night took place on Thursday, with a timed hot lap session
determining heat race starting spots for each night. Billy finished third in his heat, locking him into the field for
the Friday night portion of the World Finals event, and later came back to win
his heat for Saturday night, making the redraw for a top eight starting spot in
Saturday night’s televised event on Speed Channel.
On
Friday night, Billy would start from the 11th position for the 40
lap main event. The race was a bit of a
struggle for Dunn, with just one caution period slowing the pace early in the
race. Dunn would finish with a 14th
place result.
Saturday
night was looking much better for Dunn.
After winning his heat race earlier, he would start in the top eight for
the final feature of the 2012 season.
He drew the fifth position and lined up on the inside of row three. Billy was looking for a strong run to end
his season, but as the green flag dropped, Dunn’s car wasn’t quite right, and
he dropped back through the field. Over
the final few laps, Billy was able to fight his way back and crossed the finish
line in 12th place.
“It
certainly wasn’t the weekend we wanted to have here in Charlotte”, explains
Dunn. “We really expected to be much
better then this. Overall, we had a
good season, and we are very happy with that, but we just wanted to end the
year better then this”.
This
wraps up a fantastic 2012 season for Dunn.
He finished the Super DIRTcar Series in sixth place, greatly improving
from last year. He won the Mohawk
Raceway 358 Modified championship, as well as the Frenchie’s “Chevy Runs Deep”
Series title and finished the year in fifth place at Canandaigua Motorsports
Park in one of the toughest fields of Modifieds anywhere.
Dunn
would like to thank Number One Speed, FastLube of Watertown, SUNY Canton, Glen
A. Gould Estate Construction, Frosty’s Ice Cream, American Traditions
Motorsports, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, Jiffy Dumpster and Bicknell Racing
Products for their continued support for the 2012 racing season.
