This past weekend was a big weekend for Billy Dunn, as a solid performance on Friday night at Mohawk could have wrapped up the 2012 Mohawk Raceway championship. He was also at Canandaigua Motorsports Park looking for his second consecutive win.
Mohawk Raceway was the first stop on the weekend schedule for Dunn. He entered the evening with a 26 point advantage and under the right circumstances he could have put a firm grip on his first ever Mohawk Raceway championship. He started at the rear of the field for his 10 lap qualifying heat and moved up to finish third. In the 25 lap main event, Billy started from ninth place, and worked his way into the top five early. By lap 16 he was running in fourth place and was running a strong race. Coming out of turn four on the white flag lap, the drive shaft on Dunn’s car broke, ending his night a mere half mile from the finish line. Dunn’s 26 point lead evaporated within seconds, and unofficially left the night with a two point deficit in points.
“It will be a big night on Thursday at Mohawk as basically it will come down to who finishes ahead of who that determines the championship”, said Dunn. “We have a great team, and I can’t that the Ladouceur crew enough for giving me the opportunity to drive for them, and hopefully I can get them the championship”.
After winning at Canandaigua the previous week, Dunn was looking forward to getting back into his own Big Block Modified on Saturday night. After a fourth place finish in his qualifier, Dunn lined up for the 35 lap main event from 11th place, and slowly moved forward. He was in sixth place before the race hit the halfway point, and maintained that spot throughout the race.
This coming weekend Dunn will be at Mohawk Raceway for their final points race of 2012 on Thursday night. Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park will be double points night as they decide their 2012 championship battle. Billy will be looking to post another strong finish to maintain his current fifth place points position, and possibly move up just a little higher. The Super DIRTcar Series will resume on Sunday night at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in Elbridge, New York.
Dunn would like to thank Number One Speed, Pemco Contracting, SUNY Canton, FastLube of Watertown, Frosty’s Ice Cream, American Traditions Motorsports, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, Jiffy Dumpster and Bicknell Racing Products for their continued support for the 2012 racing season.
